William “Bill” Jerry Button, age 82, of Mansfield, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday morning, October 10, 2024, at home with his loving wife, Judie, by his side. He married Judith A. Watson on January 7, 1962, sharing 62 wonderful years of marriage together. Born May 26, 1942, in Monterey, NY, he was a son of the late James Orlando and Hazel Taft Button.
Bill worked 35 years for Agway, prior to his retirement in 1997. He graduated from Bradford Central High School, where he was a stand-out basketball player, along with competing in Baseball, Track & Field, and Cross Country. His love for sports and physical activity would continue into adulthood, often running for miles or coaching one of his daughter’s sports teams. Bill adored and cherished his three girls and actually started the Mansfield Girl’s Softball League on their behalf.
He was also a dedicated and proud grandfather, holding his family above else. Affectionately referred to as Grandpa Bill, Bompie, or Bomp-Bomp, he was the kind of grandpa that dressed as Santa every Christmas and made a surprise visit to the homes of all his grandchildren. Bill enjoyed their annual winter trips to their Florida home and visiting with their Florida friends. He loved mowing his lawn and maintaining properties, and was an incredible storyteller, especially around a good campfire. Some of his other hobbies and interests included hunting, fishing, and helping his son-in-law on the farm. Bill was also known to be quite the prankster and his great sense of humor will be dearly missed by family and friends.
Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 62 years, Judith A. Button, of Mansfield, daughters and sons-in-law, Tammy & Greg Overstrom, of Corning, Melanie & Alan Seymour, of Mansfield, and Laurie & Bryan Kasper, of Roseville; 11 grandchildren, Krista, Jodie, Joel, Mary, Luke, Tom, Allison, Sarah, Katie, Vanessa and Nick; 16 great grandchildren; several nieces & nephews; and many dear friends.
In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.
