Thelma Elizabeth (Bolt) Hilfiger, age 103, of Troy, PA, passed peacefully into eternal rest on Thursday, January 23, 2025. She was married to Lloyd Merle Hilfiger, prior to his passing in 1988. Born March 2, 1921, in Corning, NY, she was a daughter of the late Ernest & Ruth (Austin) Bolt. She graduated from the former Covington High School, obtained her BS in Music Education in 1943 from the former Mansfield State Teachers College, and achieved her MS in Music from Elmira College in 1977.

Music was Thelma’s life, as both a lifelong learner and a lifelong educator, having taught music and piano lessons within the Covington, Troy, SRU, and Athens school districts. She also furthered her music education through attending state and national workshops/conferences with the Music Educators National Conference and the Pennsylvania Music Educators Assoc. She was also very active in the community, serving as organist and choir director at various area churches. Thelma also taught Sunday School and participated in Daily Vacation Bible Schools. She was a former member of Grace Episcopal Church Cantata Singers, the Troy Music Club, and participated annually in the Troy Christmas Vesper Services. 

Thelma was a member of the Gmeiner Art Club of Wellsboro, Fine Arts Council of Troy, Inc., Troy FACT Club, Rekindle the Spirit, Inc., and volunteered with the PA Apple & Cheese Festival. She was also a former Scout Leader, volunteered with the Allen E. Pierce Free Library & Troy Food Pantry and completed many Elderhostel programs throughout the United States & Canada. Thelma also loved photography, having been recognized by the state of Pennsylvania for her nature & landscape photography. She was a member of the Elmira Camera Club, displayed many of her works in circuit exhibits throughout the surrounding area, and served as a judge for the Bradford County Library Photo Exhibits. Additionally, she enjoyed reading, creative writing and spending time outdoors.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, Jeanine Hilfiger, of Troy, Elwyn Hilfiger, of Florida, and Gary Hilfiger, of Troy; several grandchildren and great grandchildren; numerous former students; and many dear friends. 

In addition to her parents and late husband, Merle, Thelma was preceded in death by her daughters, Elizabeth Hilfiger and Cynthia Anne (Hilfiger) Steele; daughter-in-law, Bonnie Bell Hilfiger; and siblings, Ernestine Grenell and Gerald Bolt.

In keeping with Thelma’s wishes, funeral services will be private and held at the convenience of her family. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in Thelma’s name to the Sullivan State Road Baptist Church, 1600 Old State Rd, Mainesburg, PA 16932. She will be laid to rest next to her husband in the State Road Cemetery, Sullivan Twp. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Wilston-Currie Funeral Home, Mansfield, www.wilstoncurriefh.com.
