Alton "Smitty" Smith

Alton “Smitty” D. Smith, age 69, a lifelong resident of Millerton, PA, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 10, 2023, at the Arnot Ogden Medical Center in Elmira, NY, surrounded by family and friends. Born May 25, 1954, in Elmira, NY, he was the son of the late Mahlon “Pete” and Dorothy (Baird) Smith. 

Smitty retired from Hardinge Inc., of Elmira, NY, after serving nearly 40 years there as a Mill Operator. Although he took great pride in his work as a machinist, his true passions were hunting and fishing. He could be described as a true outdoorsman, enjoying various activities including hunting, fishing, or riding his ATV or snowmobile with friends. In his later years, spending time with his family and his annual salmon fishing trips to Pulaski, NY, with his son were most important to him. Smitty had a great sense of humor and was known for having a block of spicy cheese at hand, which he didn’t hesitate to offer to family and friends. His love for nature and his light-hearted spirit will be dearly missed by all who knew him. 

Left to cherish his memory are his son and daughter-in-law, Chad and Lauren Smith, of State College, PA; two grandchildren, Jamison and Olivia Smith; life partner, Vicky Smith, of Erin, NY; nieces, nephews, and many dear friends. 

In addition to his parents, Smitty was preceded in death by his daughter, Shannon Smith, in 2007, and his sister, Patricia Fusco, in 2023.

Family and friends are invited to pay their respects on Saturday, December 16, 2023, from 12 noon until 2 p.m., at Wilston-Currie Funeral Home, 130 S. Main St., Mansfield, PA 16933. Smitty’s funeral service will immediately follow viewing hours at 2:00 p.m. and he will be laid to rest in Jobs Corners Cemetery, Millerton, PA, www.wilstoncurriefh.com.
